Va. Tech moves to lock up Bud Foster with annuity payment in 2014

BLACKSBURG -- The powers that be at Virginia Tech have made it clear again that they will do everything they can to keep Bud Foster as their defensive coordinator, while preventing other schools from hiring him.

Foster, who had been offered Georgia's defensive coordinator position, reached an agreement with Tech yesterday that would result in him receiving a one-time annuity payment if he stays in his current job through the 2014 season, Athletic Director Jim Weaver said.

The amount of that payment will be disclosed after the holidays, once "other details" are worked out, Weaver said.

The agreement does not affect Foster's current contract, which this year paid him $402,000, according to a USA Today database of college football coaches' salaries. Foster has a five-year rollover contract, which means the length of the contract is extended by one year after every season, so it always remains at five years.

"If he's going to be a defensive coordinator, we wanted him to be here at Virginia Tech," Weaver said. "I felt that way, coach [Frank] Beamer felt that way and President [Charles] Steger felt that way."

Foster said the agreement does not include a provision about him eventually succeeding the 63-year-old Beamer, Tech's head coach since 1987. Weaver said after last season that the school did not want a head-coach-in-waiting plan because Beamer wasn't within a year or two of retiring.

Weaver and Foster worked out the one-time payment plan over the past several days. Georgia and Florida State recently had contacted Foster about their vacant defensive coordinator positions. Only Georgia offered, he said, "but it was serious with Florida State as well."

Florida State's new head coach and former head-coach-in-waiting, Jimbo Fisher, hired Arizona defensive coordinator Mark Stoops.

This isn't the first time Tech has invested in keeping Foster. After the 2007 season, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier asked Foster to become his defensive coordinator and discussed paying him more than any other defensive coordinator in college football. Tech countered by giving Foster a $50,000 raise that increased his salary to about $350,000 in 2008.

Foster has said he wants to become a major-conference head coach. After last season, he interviewed with Clemson, which eventually retained interim coach Dabo Swinney.

So what if officials from Cincinnati, the undefeated Big East champion, called about their vacant head coaching job?

"That would be hard to do right now, to be honest with you, unless they're going to come up with a lot of money," Foster said. "It would have to be the right job, and as a head coach."

Foster, 50, was on Beamer's first staff at Tech. He became defensive coordinator in 1995. His relationship with Beamer dates to 1979, Foster's junior season at Murray State, when Beamer became that school's defensive coordinator.

Georgia contacted him and were the most serious in the running...they offered the most money

Foster really wants a head coaching job, so he met with Beamer and Weaver and asked if it would be best for him to get a DC gig somewhere else to make himself more attractive as a Head Coach...they promised him that wasn't the case and he'll get his shot

he will make the same amount (402k) for the next 5 years...but then after the 5th year he'll make an insane amount of money (for a DC)

the other schools who contacted him were FSU and UF...and then Illinois showed interest

Spurrier made a run at him in 1998, that's when Tech had to ante up first...others have contacted every year since, but this year UGA made a very lucrative offer (500k+)

Seems like a good deal for Tech. They really aren't going to be paying him anymore money untill the five years runs out. Beamer could possibly turn over the keys at that time. I would think he would have wanted more on the front end being he is in demand right now. Honestly I am glad he didn't land at UGA. Sounds like the choice had more to do with relationships than money because he doesn't seem to be getting alot at least right now and five years is a long time in the coaching.....
